I knew instantly we were in for a treat. The food was top-notch with some of the best hash browns and pancakes I've tasted. A standout was the caramel pecan roll. I appreciated the focus on fresh ingredients, particularly apparent in their delectable gravy and perfectly textured hash browns. The portions were substantial, and the quality certainly justified the price. The service was prompt and meticulous, encapsulating a traditional diner atmosphere while maintaining a high level of attentiveness. The only minor critique is the use of artificial butter, a switch to real butter would be much appreciated. They accept card payment through ATM in $20 increments, giving the change back. One standout dish I'd recommend is the hot beef sandwich, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My wife had the french toast and ham, and although she commented that the toast could have used a bit more flavor, the ham was fine. In a nutshell, if you're passing through Lincoln and in need of a budget-friendly, quick bite in a delightful setting, then the Hi-Way Diner could just be the ticket. The smothered burrito with pork was another popular choice at our table, earning a solid 7/10. While some of the new additions to the menu can be disorienting for a nostalgic Village Inn fan like myself, they do add a fresh twist. Although we had some initial bumps, including missing some of our orders, egg shells in the eggs and some soggy dishes, the staff quickly rectified the situation. Their apologetic and professional response was greatly appreciated, although I did miss my toast and had to wait a bit for it. The bill came to a reasonable amount considering the upgraded environment and the quality of the food. My favorite as a child, the Village Inn, while different, still managed to bring back the fond memories of yesteryears. The recent renovations have done wonders for the place. All in all, despite some minor hiccups, the Village Inn's bright, inviting atmosphere and outstanding food and service merit a 5-star rating.
